A great article in memory of JG. Starts with his coma in '86 and goes from there...

http://www.thewrap.com/media/blog-post/memoriam-jerry-garcia-august-1-1942-%E2%80%93-august-9-1995-19959

My favorite part:

On the evening of Aug. 8, a week after his 53rd birthday, his third wife, Deborah, took him to dinner at an Italian restaurant, then drove him back to Serenity Knolls.

Just before dawn, a counselor looked into his room and found the star lying on top of his bed in sweatpants and T-shirt, “cuddling an apple like it was a baby, with a smile on his face.”

Much love going out to you, Jerry!

The apple part is very ummm.... interesting but I found most of this article pretty simplistic and uninformed in it's view so I for one am not giving it much credit. I'll submit this line for your review.
" But their leader’s escalating drug abuse was frightening. Jerry had been “chasing the dragon” – smoking Persian heroin – since the early ‘80s. "
And you can be the judge.

Agreed, the article is quite simple but I thought it was interesting how the author started with the coma. I will have to rescind on my "great article" comment, but it was still worth the read. I thought the nuggets about GD corp and the comments about his coma were interesting and new. The apple thing I thought was absolutely precious... I'd like to know that it is true.

When did Jerry become a regular user of the Persian? There seems to be some debate about this, but there are some sources out there that say he began using during the editing of the GD movie, which was in 77? Apparently he had heroin on him when he was busted for speeding in NJ in '73... doesn't seem like he was a regular user until '78, when you can start to hear an increased sloppiness to his playing and degradation in his vocals. Course part of the degraded vocals was his bout with laryngitis ...

I hadn't heard the '73. I got the impression it was closer to '75. MG talks about it someplace -- in the oral history, I think -- being told it was Persian Opium, finding some around the house, trying it, and realizing it wasn't opium at all, but heroin, which had pretty much been anathema to that point. '75 would be during the movie editing too, I think, since that sort of went on forever. So somewhere around that time. It certainly seems by '78 or so he was using regularly. Really sad.

Sleeping Beauty? Poison apple? Evil queen?

Maybe it was Snow White. Either way, it seems fitting. His life was kind of a fractured fairytale.

I like the innocence of that image. Just wouldn't have had the same effect if he was cuddling up with a quart of ice cream or one of the other things that did him in.
